Make the Most of Your Learning Style

Each of us is an individual and we all learn in different ways. The important thing is to know the learning style that suits you best, and then develop it.

This will help you on any distance learning or online learning course.
At what time of day do you learn best? If you know - fine.
When you come to work out your study timetable, make sure that you take this into account.
But maybe you don't know when you study best - either because you haven't studied for a while, or because you've never considered this question.

Then it may be useful to arrange your first few study periods at different times of the day, and see when you feel you get the most out of them.
Bear these findings in mind when you come to discuss your timetable with your tutor. Can you work in long stretches? Some people can, and prefer to study this way.
But for most of us, short bursts of intensive study are preferable.
These may be from thirty minutes to an hour.

It's much easier to fit short spells into a busy lifestyle anyway.

Do you need to make notes? Perhaps there are some things that you particularly want to remember, and writing them down can help reinforce what you are learning.
Try using a "highlighter" pen for emphasis and to help you when you come to revise.
Can you work with distraction? Ask yourself: can I learn with the radio or television blaring or with people speaking in the room? Or do I need peace and quiet in order to study? Some people find that they can study in circumstances that would have the rest of us tearing our hair out.
But, for the majority of us, it's preferable to have a reasonably quiet atmosphere for study. It's important not to underestimate the effort and determination you will need if you are going to learn effectively through distance learning. But you should be encouraged by the fact that many thousands of people in your situation have succeeded in the past, and have gone on to further their careers.
Remember that Nelson Mandela gained his law degree through distance learning whilst in Robben Island jail. An inspiration to distance learning students everywhere!
